How to set up basket abandonment emails in Klaviyo

Automatically follow up with customers who start checkout but don’t complete their purchase, using Glu events as triggers in Klaviyo.

Before you start

Make sure Klaviyo is connected to Glu before getting started. How to connect Klaviyo and Glu.

1 ᐧ Create a new flow in Klaviyo

Log in to Klaviyo and create a new flow. Click Your metrics, select Glu, and find the Started checkout metric. Select it as your trigger and save.

2 ᐧ Add a profile filter to the trigger

To make sure the flow only triggers for customers who haven’t completed a purchase, add a profile filter to the trigger.

Click on the trigger and select Profile filters. Add the following condition:

  • What someone has done (or not done)

  • Person has Placed Order - zero times - since starting this flow

Click Save. This ensures the flow only continues for customers who started checkout but didn’t go on to place an order.

3 ᐧ Add a time delay

Click the + icon and select Logic, then choose Time delay. Set how long you want to wait before sending the first email - typically a few hours after the customer abandoned their basket.

4 ᐧ Add your first email

Click the + icon again and select Email. Configure the email content and settings as you normally would in Klaviyo.

5 ᐧ Add a follow-up email (optional)

To send a second reminder a few days later, repeat steps 2 and 3 - add another time delay followed by another email, and configure to your preference.

6 ᐧ Go live

Once you’re happy with the flow, set it to live and Klaviyo will automatically start reaching out to customers who abandon their basket.

💡 Good to know: The available metrics in Klaviyo will vary depending on your Glu implementation. If you can’t see the Started checkout metric, check that your Klaviyo connection is active.
